Welcome to the Green Scene!

Hello, Valued Commercial Partners,

July is when commercial landscapes across Connecticut and the Metro New York region face some of the most demanding conditions of the year.

High temperatures, strong sunlight, humidity, heavy rain, dry periods, and increased property activity can quickly impact turf, plant material, seasonal color, and irrigation performance. Landscapes that looked strong in the spring may begin showing signs of heat stress, inconsistent watering, disease pressure, or excessive growth.

Our teams remain focused on keeping commercial properties clean, healthy, safe, and professionally presented throughout the peak of summer.

With more than 40 years of experience caring for commercial landscapes, we know July maintenance requires more than routine service. It requires close observation, proper timing, and the ability to respond quickly as conditions change.

July Focus: Heat and Water Management

Water management is one of the most important parts of commercial landscape care in July.

Turf, trees, shrubs, annual flowers, and newly installed plant material may require additional moisture during periods of intense heat. However, simply increasing watering is not always the right solution.

Irrigation systems should be checked for:

  • Broken or misaligned sprinkler heads

  • Dry areas caused by poor coverage

  • Leaks, runoff, or excessive watering

  • Clogged nozzles

  • Overspray onto walkways, buildings, or parking areas

  • Watering schedules that no longer match current conditions

Too little water can lead to brown turf, stressed plants, and declining seasonal color. Too much water can contribute to disease, weak roots, erosion, and unnecessary waste.

The goal is to provide the right amount of water at the right time.

Protecting Turf and Plant Health

July heat can expose weak turf, compacted soil, damaged lawn edges, drainage problems, and areas affected by heavy traffic.

Some turf discoloration may be caused by heat or drought stress, while other areas may be affected by insects, disease, poor soil conditions, or irrigation gaps. Identifying the cause early is critical before the damage spreads or becomes more difficult to repair.

Plant material should also be monitored for wilting, leaf discoloration, insect activity, dead branches, and signs of disease.

Selective pruning may be needed to maintain clearance around:

  • Building entrances

  • Walkways and sidewalks

  • Parking areas

  • Monument signs

  • Windows and lighting

  • Outdoor gathering spaces

Proper pruning improves appearance, visibility, airflow, and pedestrian access without placing unnecessary stress on plants during the summer.

Maintaining a Strong Property Presentation

Commercial properties often experience increased activity during the summer. Outdoor seating areas, courtyards, entrances, common spaces, and pedestrian routes may receive more use from tenants, residents, employees, customers, and guests.

These high-visibility areas should remain a priority. Consistent mowing, trimming, edging, weed control, debris removal, bed maintenance, and seasonal color care help preserve a clean and professional appearance.

July growth can be unpredictable. Some areas may grow rapidly after rainfall, while others slow down during periods of heat and dryness. Our teams adjust maintenance practices based on actual site conditions rather than treating every property the same.

Preparing for Summer Storms

Strong thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and high winds can create immediate concerns for commercial properties.

After severe weather, property managers should watch for:

  • Fallen branches or damaged trees

  • Blocked walkways and entrances

  • Standing water

  • Soil erosion

  • Mulch washout

  • Clogged drains

  • Debris in parking lots and landscape beds

  • Plant material leaning into pedestrian or vehicle areas

Addressing storm-related concerns quickly helps protect safety, prevent further damage, and restore the professional presentation of the property.

Midseason Enhancements

July is also a good time to evaluate areas that are no longer performing as expected.

Seasonal color replacements, turf repairs, plant replacements, pruning, drainage improvements, bed renovations, mulch touch-ups, and entrance upgrades can help refresh a property during the middle of the season.

A targeted enhancement does not always require a major renovation. Improving one highly visible entrance, monument sign, courtyard, or common area can significantly strengthen the overall impression of the property.

Planning enhancement work early also allows for better scheduling before late-summer demand increases.
